BAHS's Lewis voted Most Valuable Player

MOORE - When Broken Arrow High School switched
defenses in the fourth quarter, it turned out
Muskogee's lights Saturday night.

The Lady Tigers went to a trap and literally stole the
John Nobles Invitational championship in the fourth
quarter at Moore High School.

BAHS won coach Ed Calhoon's heart at the same
time by rallying from a five-point deficit for a 39-36
victory.

Junior Taylor Lewis, who had 19 points and 63 in the
three-game tournament, was voted the Most Valuable
Player by the coaches.

More important, it was the first girls basketball
tournament won by BAHS in at least seven years.

"Perhaps people will have to take us a little bit more
seriously now," Calhoon said after his team improved
to 6-7. "I am so proud how this bunch keeps working
and getting better."

It was the fourth straight victory for the Lady Tigers,
whose last defeat was inflicted by Muskogee in a
similar fashion.

On Jan. 18, Broken Arrow let a 10-point lead in the
fourth quarter dissolve into a 43-36 loss at Tiger Fieldhouse.

On this night, Muskogee had a 33-28 lead in the fourth quarter when the momentum switched.

Sophomore Brooke Scott keyed the comeback with two steals that resulted in a pair of layups.

A steal by Lewis kept the comeback alive.

BAHS was down 37-36 with 46 seconds left and faced a crucial inbound play.

Muskogee had three defenders pressuring Lewis and Valerie Santiago.

BAHS assistant coach Jade Grigg designed the game-winner.

Senior Vanessa Bledsoe slipped into the paint and hit a short jumper that put the Lady Tigers in front to stay.

Broken Arrow's defense didn't waver through an off-shooting night and limited Muskogee's Heather Davis to
eight points, only two of them through the first three quarters.

"This is a very excited and tried team of girls," said Calhoon, in his second season at BAHS.

The Lady Tigers didn't find a rhythm until the second half.

"They came focused and ready to play," Calhoon said. "But, they were so focused and want to play so well,
they couldn't relax."

This was Broken Arrow's second victory over a Class 6A school.

"Muskogee, I've seen, has been ranked anywhere from 13th to 16th," Calhoon said. "We've been between
27th and 29th. This was a big win for us."

BAHS returns home Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against Union.
