Brighter days ahead for Lady Tiger basketball

BAHS could be a force "to be reckoned with next year'

When Ed Calhoon walked the short flight of stairs from the Broken Arrow High School dressing
room, he pointed over his shoulder.

"There are a lot of hurting girls down there," the Lady Tiger coach said.

That was moments after BAHS's 36-35 double overtime loss to Tulsa Memorial in the first round of
the Class 6A regional at Claremore High School.

The loss ended the season for the Lady Tigers, who were that one-point from ending a six-year
cycle. Not since 2002 has BAHS won a first round game in the big-school tournament.

"This is one our girls felt they should have, could have won," Calhoon said, softly. "That's why they
are hurting."

A year ago, there wasn't that hollow feeling.

"Not when you're getting beat by 30 points," Calhoon said. "But, this bunch is different. They really
care for each other and they want to win."

This BAHS team won three more games than in 2006.

Yet, the difference was light years, said Calhoon, who had just completed his second season.

"We had a lot of games come down to the wire this year," he said.

Calhoon said the Lady Tigers "will take a little break" before embarking on the offseason.

Already, Calhoon is mapping out the future and he might have a crew to sail his ship.

The Lady Tigers had only one senior - Jasmine Sampson - in uniform the last month of the season.

Sampson ended her career with a 13-rebound effort against Memorial.
In 2009, barring injuries, BAHS should have the most experienced team since Dean Pierce
coached in 2002, when the Lady Tigers last reached the state tournament.

Headlining Calhoon's crew will be three-year starter Taylor Lewis, BAHS's leading scorer the last
two years.

Junior Jasmine Gutierez, sophomore Valerie Santiago and freshman Chelsi Dennis started in
Monday's loss.

Freshman Brooke Scott and juniors Vanessa Bledsoe and Katie Morgan will add priceless
experience.

"Also," Calhoon said, "we've got to stay healthy."

Calhoon was referring to juniors Brianna Hopkins and Becca Hill and senior Aga Golunksa.

Hopkins, considered BAHS's best defensive player, missed most of the second semester with a
separated shoulder. Hill was sidelined with a medical condition but both are expected to return.

Golunksa, a post, was shelved most of the campaign by a knee injury.

"We'll hook it up this spring and really get after it in the summer," Calhoon said. "This will be a
group to be reckoned with next year."

FORWARD THINKER — Broken Arrow High
School boys basketball coach Rusty Stecker

Tiger basketball coach got started day after
Class 6A state tournament

Next season, for Broken Arrow High School
basketball coach Rusty Stecker, can start now.

As far as he's concerned it has.

After the Tigers' first round elimination from the
Class 6A state tournament last week, Stecker
began preparations for 2009.

He watched the last three big-school games in
Oklahoma City.

For the veteran coach, it wasn't a vacation or
time away from school duties.

Stecker, having just completed his ninth season
at BAHS, was taking notes and already compiling
a scout report on next season's opponents by
punching notes and thoughts into his cell phone.

When he returned home, Stecker put together a
three-page "do list" for next season.

"And that," he said, smiling and pointing to his
computer screen, "is just the beginning."

Stecker said off-season training begins
March 24. He couldn't look forward without
looking over his shoulder.

The Tigers were ranked as low as 23rd in preseason polls.
"We weren't better than No. 13 two weeks into February," he said.

A six-game winning streak carried the Tigers into the state tournament and had BAHS ranked in
the top five.

"I am so proud just how far they progressed this year," Stecker said. "We talked a lot about
'playing with heart' and that's what this team did."

Among those graduating are 6-6 post Chris Gardner, BAHS's leading scorer and top rebounder,
along with Nick Dennis, Corey Shannon and point guards

Kendall Barrs, Katero Reynolds and Micah Robertson. Barrs, Reynolds and Gardner were the
only players with varsity experience from the 2006-07 season.

The nine losses were by a total of 27 points, three of those by one point. Nine was the largest
margin.

It marked the first time a Stecker team didn't lose by double-digits.

"This team was overlooked and look what they accomplished," he said. "We'll probably be
overlooked next year, too."

BAHS returns seven with varsity experience. Only three on this year's 19-8 team had prior varsity
experience. Six of the returnees will have vast varsity playing time.

Forward Chris Collins will be the lone true starter back. Brothers, Stephen and Seth Dennis,
logged considerable playing time.

Evan Maynard was a starter late in the season while Jake Toupal and Drew Howerton saw
valuable playing time. Point guard Danny Santiago, appeared in seven games - but started the
season opener.

If the Tigers want a third straight trip to the state tournament, their work "doesn't start Oct. 1 (first
day of practice)," Stecker said. "These guys will have to take on a lot of themselves," he said.
"They have to buy into what we want."

Advertising sales do not benefit BAHS

Out-of-state firm selling basketball poster ads

An out-of-state company apparently is sweeping Broken Arrow collecting advertisements for a
high school basketball poster.

Broken Arrow High School Athletic Director Ken Ellett said Varsity Promotions from Davenport,
Iowa, is telling customers proceeds are benefiting the high school.

"That's not true," Ellett said. "We don't see a dime from these kind of people."

Ellett said BAHS nor the school's basketball booster club is selling a schedule poster.

"I've had about four calls about this," Ellett said. "Two of them were after-the-fact and didn't
realize what had happened."

Merchants approached by companies claiming they represent BAHS athletics can call the BAHS
athletic department at 259-4520, Ellett said.

"Our teams, our parents and our booster clubs work hard to raise money for those programs,"
Ellett said. "It's a shame that people will come through and take advantage like this."
